Opening Reception: September 16, 2022
Being exhibited in his second solo show, David James Strain presents large scale paintings from his new series titled Eternal. This series of paintings will show the early primordial development of organic natural looking forms that will begin to integrate with industrial, architectural styled forms. The imagery eventually becomes entirely industrial and begins to rotate backwards towards a redeveloping of organic natural looking forms. The theme is nature will always find a way to exist and comes full circle. These acrylic paintings use straight edge forms that coexist with free flowing shapes where color circumnavigates the composition to create visual balance. Forms appear to release, move, and breakaway from their environments and origins. Each acrylic painting on wood is detailed and meticulously crafted on both the front and back sides. All of these pieces take an upwards of 100 hours from build to varnish.
David James Strain is a visual artist living North of Houston in Spring. He and his wife are both hairstylists and own and operate a boutique hair salon in Tomball called Salon Strain. David James is exhibiting 8 original works of art within this salon space that will be completely converted to an art gallery on Saturday, September 16th, from 5 - 8pm and Sunday the 17th from 11-5pm.

The drawings, paintings and photo collages in this exhibition titled, Precision of Space, show David James Strain’s progression after graduating in 2008 with a BFA from The University of Texas in San Antonio. Within this timeframe, Strain’s life has taken many twists and turns. He worked on an offshore drilling rig for five years before entering the corporate realm. Feeling out of place behind a desk, he quickly left and pursued a career in the beauty industry alongside his wife (a hairstylist of 20 years). He now own’s a boutique hair salon with his wife, while raising their only daughter. He’s been a creator through it all and his drive to pursue his artistic endeavors has never wavered. Strain is grateful to have a home studio in Houston where he spends many hours perfecting his artwork and a career that allows him the gift of time to pursue his creativity.
Being exhibited are selected works which show the progression from his photographic student work to his more recent acrylic paintings on wood. This exhibition shows the foundation of Strain’s current approach to creating art. The hard-lined black and white drawings of futuristic cityscapes to the sculptural approach of his first large black and white painting on wood titled Ascension. The imagery transitions to colored architecture and organic forms that appear to move and breakaway from their environments. All of these pieces are original, hand crafted and communicate his growth as an artist.
